Internships at Kimmel Orchard
Kimmel Orchard offers summer internships to students looking for working experience in the fields of horticulture, orchard management, natural resources, agritourism, marketing and business development. The 96-acre orchard is devoted to the production of apples, tart cherries, peaches, strawberries, pumpkins, asparagus and more.
These internships couple both hands-on work experience and in-house training programs to make this a true working/learning experience. We also provide field trips that explore the area and regional alternative, sustainable agriculture enterprises that embody alternative agriculture entrepreneurship.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please email a cover letter describing your interest in this internship opportunity along with your resume to email@example.com.
I’m an environmental science major with an emphasis in climate science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and entering my senior year. I’m originally from Zionsville, Indiana but have been in Nebraska for school since 2015. I chose Nebraska because I have a very strong interest in studying and observing extreme weather conditions, which all Nebraskans know is plentiful here! Extreme weather is something that has always interested me, even as a little kid. In fact, one of my first words was “humid”! While at UNL, I have participated in Sustain UNL, which is a club that focuses on sustainable living on campus and in Lincoln.
As I have gone through my schooling I have become interested in studying how natural resources, climate, and agriculture all tie in together. These interests are what led me to Kimmel! While here at Kimmel I get to see firsthand how everyday weather and local climate can affect the growth of all of the various fruits that we have here at the orchard. Going forward, I hope to use the knowledge gained here at Kimmel and at UNL to aid our growing world in better handling of volatile climate and weather.
I am an orchard intern at Kimmel this year. I will be a sophomore at the University of Nebraska Lincoln studying Agriculture Education and Animal Science. I grew up in Murray, Nebraska and graduated from Conestoga High School. I am one-third of a set of triplets, and both of my sisters attend UNL along with me. At UNL, I am involved in clubs such as the Rodeo Association, Block and Bridle, and the Ag Education Club. I also serve on the executive teams of Block and Bridle and Ag Education Club. This year I am participating in the Nebraska Pork Producers Mentorship Program, which is a program which provides leadership training related to the pork industry. When I’m not at the orchard, you can find me riding horses or playing with my dog, Owen.
In the future, I hope to teach agriculture at a high school in Nebraska, along with being an FFA advisor. I hope to take with me the things I learn during my time at Kimmel and pass it on to my students. I also hope to become involved in production agriculture, possibly raising cattle or swine.
My summer at Kimmel Orchard & Vineyard will be one to remember. My position as the Business and Marketing Intern will help prepare me for my future career with the hands-on experience that I gained.
Here at Kimmel, I was able to work with a great team of leaders who created a fun environment to be a part of. I was able to learn how to do day-to-day transactions in retail while also understanding the art of making a deal in business. I also gained a whole new perspective on how to advertise an event to a large group of people through print, radio and social media. These experiences I have gained will help me succeed as I finish my schooling at UNL and even into my future career.
